A woman with empty eyes smiled without blinking.
A towering man whose shadow moved before he did.
A child who never seemed to grow older, though generations claimed to remember seeing the same face.
The crowd applauded.

No one noticed when the seats beside them slowly became empty.
By sunrise, the tent had vanished without a trace.
The carnival workers insisted there had never been a freak show.
But every autumn, another name quietly disappears from the guest register.
